RELIEF Study: Treatment of Overactive Bladder in Older Women

A group of three women gather around a table.

The RELIEF Study is to help improve how we treat urinary urgency, frequency and bladder leakage in older women. Urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), also called overactive bladder, is when you feel a sudden, strong desire to pass urine that results in leakage before you reach the toilet. Urgency-related leakage is common in older women and causes shame, discomfort and expense.

We are studying how well Onabot (BOTOX©) treatment works for older women. It is already a commonly used treatment for younger women. We expect that the usual dose will work well for older women but are studying a lower dose too. We believe a lower dose will be effective with fewer side effects. This study will provide evidence of the effectiveness, safety and quality of life improvement of Onabot treatment for older women.

  • Onabot medication is an effective and safe treatment that four in five women find satisfactory.
  • Onabot is less used among older women, partly due to fewer research studies.
  • We want to understand the effectiveness and side effects of two different doses of Onabot.
  • We also want to understand women’s experience of urgency incontinence and their treatment goals.

Who may be eligible for the study?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are age 70 or older
