Specimen Requirements:
Container: Fluid in sterile, leakproof container, aspirate syringe. Preferred volume: 5 mL Minimum Volume: 1 mL
Storage/Transport: Room temperature preferred. Transport immediately to lab. Refrigerated specimens accepted but may affect the recovery of anaerobes.
Causes for Rejection: 1. Specimen container unlabeled or labeled incorrectly. Notify on-call pathology resident, or Operating Room, to come to laboratory to label specimens appropriately. If unable to do so, specimen will be rejected. 2. Stuart swab 3. Needle still on syringe. 4. Frozen 5. Contact physician if specimen volume is insufficient for the number of tests requested. It may be necessary to triage testing based on specimen volume and patient clinical needs.
